Dent corn, scientifically known as Zea mays, produces strong and robust plants that yield long 10” ears with 3-5 ears per stock. These towering plants can grow up to 18 feet tall and produce a substantial amount of silage. Roasted fresh ears with creamy white kernels are a tasty treat, while dried kernels are excellent for making cornmeal and flour. Dent corn is heat-tolerant and well-suited for growing in southern climates.

To grow, sow dent corn seeds outdoors in rows that are 24-36"" apart, with each seed planted 6-10" apart in fertile soil and full sun after the last danger of spring frost has passed and the soil has warmed thoroughly. Due to the wind-pollinated nature of corn, it is advisable to plant in blocks of rows rather than in a single long row to ensure that the pollen is evenly distributed, reducing the number of kernels "skips."
