The Sambucus callicarpa is a perennial, deciduous shrub that grows upright and is indigenous to the Pacific West. It displays attractive, pinnate foliage that is lance-shaped and green, which provides a lovely contrast to its lacy, fragrant white flower clusters. After the flowers, bright red berry clusters follow. This shrub is naturally found in woodlands and valley bottoms, usually in close proximity to bodies of water, and prefers moist, well-draining soil. The Sambucus callicarpa is beneficial to wildlife, providing food, nectar, and shelter to birds, small mammals, and beneficial insects. The berries and flowers of this shrub have been traditionally used for dye-making purposes.
